Since opening its doors in 2003, Scheck Industrial Corporation has become a "Powerhouse" of a
contractor when dealing with utility companies and managing their boiler outages and new capital
projects. "Our goal is not to be the largest contractor, our goal is to be the contractor of fi rst choice,"
said Steve Beam, President of Scheck Industrial Corporation. And they have been the fi rst choice by
many of the Southern Illinois Utility companies who have chosen SIC to support their needs. SIC has
also repaired and built boilers in Minnesota, Iowa, Colorado, North Dakota and Missouri. Some years
the company has employed nearly 20% of the Union Boilermakers throughout the country.
About Scheck Industrial Corporation
Scheck Power
In the fall of 2008, Southern Illinois Power Cooperative
called on Scheck Industrial Corporation to bring in nearly
280 Boilermakers for one of its capital projects to improve
effi ciency at the facility. Scheck was selected as one of
seven "Premier Business Partners" for SIPC for the project
that included installation of a new air heater, overhaul
the turbine, and installation of a forced oxidation
system on the SO2 scrubber.
Scheck Scope included:
1. Replace the existing Rothemuhle air preheater
with a new Ljungstrom air preheater
2. Remove the bottom half of 4-1 and 4-3 cyclone
burners and replace them with the new style
solid welded membrane
3. Retube the condenser
4. Inspect the condenser and do any repair work needed
5. Remove and install a new feed water heater
6. Install the new piping and equipment on the gypsum
oxidation/dewatering project
Scheck had to reroute much of the piping, electrical,
and fi ber optics while in the process of installing
temporary support and reinforcement steel for the
erection and placement of the new air preheater.
Monorails were installed to facilitate rigging of the support
steel and the new air preheater. The largest of the beams
weighed 395 lbs per foot and the largest pieces of the new
air preheater weighed 20 tons and the largest piece of
the new duct work weighed 13 tons.
The new air preheater was built adjacent to the old one
which was installed in 1978. When demolition of the old
air preheater was complete, and all of the new duct work
installed, we set the rigging to position the new air preheater.
Scheck's crews placed jacks under the new air preheater
and raised it suffi ciently to put the rollers under it.
With its precise preplanning they were able to roll the
new 240 ton unit into place in about 10 minutes.
From September 2008 through December of 2008
Scheck worked two shifts, six or sometimes seven days
a week, at ten hours per day. Scheck employed about
195 boilermakers on the day shift and 75 on the night
shift along with other support craftspeople. Project
Superintendent Ricky Horton and the entire SIC
Team should be commended for a job well done.
Scheck's Boiler "Powerhouse"
Refi nery
STS exceeded all expectations in safety, performance and budget control
for the fall turn-a-rounds at Flint Hills Resources, Pine Bend, Minnesota;
Marathon Petroleum, St. Paul Park, Minnesota; and Exxon Mobil in Channahon,
Illinois. STS had a number of responsibilities at these locations, from engineering
support, to planning, I&E coordination, and subsidizing in-house instrumentation
departments with technicians.
STS had installation crews working in various units that are being refurbished
with new instrumentation to insure all proper installation guidelines are followed.
Scheck Technical Services is proud to have worked in over eight different
refi neries in the past eight years - truly a testament to Scheck's ability to provide
complete instrumentation and piping services for refi neries nationwide.
Refi nery Projects Keep Coming
Scheck Mechanical Corporation's
nationwide refi nery experience proved
to be a key factor in Sunoco awarding
the company the Tail Gas Unit, with
backup amine regenerator and
associated incinerator, to ensure 100%
redundancy in sulfur processing
capability.
Scheck's scope included providing
pre-construction services for construct-
ability model reviews at 60 and 90%.
The Scheck team also produced a
project preliminary and +/- 10%
defi nitive estimate budgets while
developing contingency cost using a
risk based plan. Scheck management
prepared work scopes and bid packages
for all sub-contractor activities and
conducted bid meetings to compile
bid tabs for sub-contractor selection
and contract issuance for Sunoco.
The teams' task was to deliver the
project at industry pacesetter level
based on cost and an incident free
start up within a normal start up time
frame. The project was started in
October of 2008 and is scheduled for
completion mid-summer of 2009.
Project Controls- The Scheck
differentiator!
Sunoco was very impressed with the
company's project controls and tracking
procedures, specifi cally it's "Scheck Trac"
labor tracking program. All managed
contractors were monitored daily
through a security daily gate log and
balanced to "Scheck Trac" and Sunoco
Tracks systems. Reported weekly are
the Total Project costs. This information
was provided in graphical and
spreadsheet format with the ability
to drill down in detail as needed.
Weekly the core project team is
presented with the cash fl ow forecast
and an executive summary to allow
decisions to be made to steer the
project to a successful completion.
Great job Scheck Team!!
