Detroit, MI

Scheck Technical Services was recently awarded the instrumentation contract for the Marathon Detroit Heavy Oil Upgrade Project (DHOUP). Our scope of work includes the installation of over 4,000 tagged devices along with the installation of all air supplies and subheaders for all air users. The upgrades will add new equipment at Marathon's Detroit refinery – Michigan's only refinery – to process additional heavy crude oils, such as those from Canada. This project will increase the refinery's capacity from approximately 106,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 120,000 bpd, adding more than 400,000 to 120,000 bpd, adding more than 400,000 gallons per day of clean transportation fuel to the marketplace.

Expansion Project

Canadian crudes are the driver for the expansion at the Detroit Refinery. The new facility will allow Marathon to take greater advantage of Canada's abundant and less expensive heavier crude oils.

Marathon new production capabilities would better align the project's completion with
changes in Canadian oil sands production projections. The project will require an average of 800 construction workers a day until its completion. It will ultimately add some 60 full-time employees and 75 full-time contractors. Marathon will greatly expand the number of trades people on the project by mid-2011 – from approximately 650 to anywhere from 1,800 to 2,000. Marathon expects to complete the project by the fourth quarter of 2012.
